Tahira Kashyap Talks About Rough Patch In Her Marriage & How She’d Almost Given Up On Ayushmann Khurrana

Tahira Kashyap has been an inspiration for many with her journey of battling cancer. And Ayushmann Khurrana has stood by her like a rock, setting tremendous marriage goals! However, marriage always isn’t as sweet as it appears to be.

In an interview, Tahira got candid about her relationship with Ayushmann and how it had its ups and downs over the years.

When Ayushmann’s debut Vicky Donor hit theatres back in 2012, it became a massive hit. The Indian audience was all praises for him and claimed him to be a gem for Bollywood. However, the movie didn’t make it to Tahira’s good books at first because of Ayushmann’s intimate scenes with co-star Yami Gautam.

“I had a problem with him kissing on screen. I felt like a big, huge fat whale sitting at home. When you are pregnant your hormones also go up and down. Here this boy is looking at his youngest youth best and he is romancing women and what is this onscreen kiss! We both were very young. He didn’t have the time and patience to take me along and I didn’t have the patience to understand. There was this disconnect that we were not there for each other to take each other along in that journey. Somewhere he knew that she doesn’t mean mad. I also knew he wasn’t cheating. I had to evolve as a person to understand what art is”, she said.

This is a special one as this is a first for the both of us together. Haven’t gotten ourselves clicked like this in the past 17 years (including 10 years of marriage) except for the last time at our marriage where we adorned our wedding as Christmas baubles sitting on a red sofa accepting shagun that would contribute to the wedding expense. Yea very middle class but much fun. The memories of that day do tickle a funny bone but some are scarring like the one with the photographer. He made us make poses that were extremely cliched but then he had to exhibit his artistic side too. So from looking from the corner of our eyes towards each other, to looking away from each other with our hands intertwined strategically exposing our wedding bands. From him standing behind me & me sitting in front of him & visa versa. From his hand holding my hand but not directly, Alas that would be too tacky for the maverick behind the camera. So the genious had my husband run his hand from behind my waist & hold my hand from the front & his other hand ran from the front of my waist stretching enough to reach my other far fetched suffocated hand that was trying hard to breath through the little pores that were sparingly left sans the mehendi, the 2 dozen red & white bangles, nani mama’s golden bangles, my mother’s favourite bangles, Babaji’s Kadda & last but not the least the kalira’s (golden embellishments hanging from the bangles). Amidst the many such contortions the only one left was us twisting our bodies around each other like the Naag & Naagin. Though that crazy man was making us dance to his tunes anyway! So from then to now, it’s quite a leap. Thanku @subisamuel @htbrunch I thought it really would require a special day for us to get ourselves clicked professionally. But I didn’t realise the day would just not be special it will also be memorable for not only am I more comfortable in my skin today but also for the awareness of the cause that I am spreading & enduring. Guess there is still more scope to love myself hence going through another testing phase. I somehow feel I’ll surge. If I was ok being a X’mas tree at my wedding this better be ok! #breastcancerawareness

Talking about when their marriage hit a pretty rough patch, Tahira revealed that there were numerous times when she wanted to give up. Ayushmann, in his own way, held on.

“I had given up many times but he did not. He didn’t use to give up but he also didn’t make up… We both have really evolved as artists, as companions and we have seen a journey including cancer being a part of it. Where we are right now, it is at its strongest best.”

While Ayushmann’s increasing popularity and back to back successes did make her happy for him, on the inside Tahira was battling her own insecurities as well. She reveals how she has always wanted to be a director and even planned on making a short film much earlier. But she held back contemplating failure.

“He has reached a certain professional point of his career and I didn’t want to be a shame. I was very scared of what people would think. We are our biggest enemies. I didn’t even tell him for the longest time that I wanted to be a director.”

But now, Tahira is all set to make her directorial debut produced by Tanuj Garg and Atul Kasbekar which will be entirely shot in Mumbai.
