‘Romance Doesn’t Only Belong To The Young’: Tabu On The Lack Of Mature Love Stories

Bollywood, which can be called the heart of Indian cinema, often shies away from showcasing mature love stories. Love, according to most of Bollywood, is for the young, beautiful and attractive. They feature actors in their 20s and 30s basking in the vibrancy of first loves and youthful passions. The movies are filled with energetic dance sequences, picturesque locations and melodramatic twists. These things appeal to the younger audience. However, this leaves a significant gap in narratives that explore the complexities and depths of love in later life.

Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya

This kind of cinema ignores the rich and complex relationships experienced by those in their 40s, 50s and beyond – whose stories of love and companionship can be equally, if not more, compelling. Movies like ‘Cheeni Kum’ and ‘Piku’ were some of the very few attempts made to explore this range of stories. But if you remember, they stood out, precisely because they are a rarity in an industry dominated by youthful romance.

However, a new film is set to release in the theatres named ‘Auron Mein Kaha Dum Tha’ featuring Ajay Devgn, Tabu and Jimmy Shergill. It is a love story between the characters of Tabu and Devgn – both middle-aged people. At the trailer launch for the event, Tabu said something very interesting that resonated with many.

Auron Mein Kaha Dum Tha

Romance does not only belong to the young, she said.

“Romance does not only belong to the young or a certain age group. I don‚Äôt think there is any barrier when you talk about romance, love, and relationships. Actually the film is more about a relationship than love and romance I feel. And human relationships are the most interesting thing that have lent themselves to cinema. Love and romance is a part of human relationships. It is the most beautiful thing to explore for a filmmaker, also because there is no end to where you can take that relationship,” Indian Express quoted her saying.

We hope that Bollywood does not sideline stories like this as they have immense potential and display the profound and multifaceted nature of love.
