Sushmaji Rescues An Indian Student Stuck In Tanzania Even Though She Didn’t Tweet To Her

Charanya Kannan is an Indian student who studies at the Harvard Business School. She traveled to Tanzania for a course on private-public partnerships.

A bike thief snatched her handbag while she was on her way back to the hotel.

She lost her tickets, passport, all her money, two phones, and credit cards. The robbers snatched her bag violently and she fell down on the road and was bruised and hit her head hard on the tarmac.

None of the local people around her came to help her. Understandably she went to the Indian Embassy for help.

And here is the shocking and unsurprising thing – the consular officer said nothing can be done about it, even if she paid a 2 crore rupees bribe!

 

The officer further told her that it would take at least 3 weeks to issue her a new passport. He also told her that she could get a new passport in India but getting her to India will take her 2 months at least!

Waiting 2 months to get a new passport was not an option for Charanya because she had to get back to Harvard for her studies. Also, she has a 2-year-old baby back in the US.

 

The officer also had the cheek to tell her –

“You tweet to anyone. Let’s see what they can do. What will they do? They will tell us to do and again we only do it. You tweet to anyone, let’s see what you can do,”

She wrote to The News Minute and they published her ordeal.

 

And the savior of everyone stranded abroad, Mrs. Sushma Swaraj came across the blog and was furious

Going by her tweets the consular officer is going to see the bad side of Mrs. Swaraj, it seems

Seeing how the issue was deteriorating for the Tanzania High Commission, the Deputy High Commissioner himself handled the case of Charanya and everything was sorted.

To do even more damage control, the High Commission at Tanzania even tweeted to Sushma Swaraj
