Sushma Swaraj Reacts Strongly After An Indian Man Gets Murdered In A Hate Crime In The USA

Donald Trump’s America has become one where racial slurs seem to be the norm. White supremacists have become a lot bolder as seen both on social media and in some neighbourhoods in the country. Us Indians always looked up to the United States in an aspirational manner. However, events in recent months have disillusioned us to the harsh reality that all is not well in this great land to the west.

Most recently, Adam Purinton, a bartender in Kansas City, yelled “get out of my country” and started shooting at the patrons watching a match there. Srinivas Kuchibhotla, 32, died at the hospital as a result of injuries he sustained in the shooting.

Other victims of the shooting include Alok Madasani, 32, and Ian Grillot, 24. They were both hospitalised and are in stable condition now.

Grillot, one of the injured, tried to subdue the shooter as best he could and was shot in the chest, very close to a major artery.

“We’re all humans, so I just did what was right to do.”

External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj was gravely upset about the incident.

US Senator for Kansas, Jerry Moran also posted this statement on Facebook.

“I strongly condemn violence of any kind, especially if it is motivated by prejudice and xenophobia.”

After condemning the incident, Sushma Swaraj flung into action to help the family of the victim.

Soon enough, assistance was on the way.

When the FBI was asked, they were unable to confirm whether this was indeed a hate crime and said it was too soon to tell.

GoFundMe pages were set up to secure funding for all expenses for the victims’ families.

The scene of the crime was shut down as a sign outside the bar read that it would be closed indefinitely.

I used to look at to the United States and try to mimic it every step of the way. I was in awe of the place. Each of us had the country on our list of dream destinations. However, such incidents (which have become commonplace in recent years), make me want to readjust the lens through which I view the United States. Is it still the epitome of a progressive society? I doubt it.
