The man on whose life, the Johnny Depp starrer Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was made, Hunter S. Thompson was the inventor of what we call today the Gonzo journalism – a style where the reporter becomes a part of the story and often writes in first person narrative. Thompson was in his “Fortified Compound” called Owl Farm, Colorado where he shot himself dead with a gun.

He was on the phone with his wife, Anita, when he cocked the gun and Anita thought that cocking of the gun was just the sound of the typewriter he was using for writing an ESPN column. The typewriter had just one page with a single word written on it – “counselor”. However, an apparent suicide note written by him to Anita was published by Rolling Stone.

His note read: “No More Games. No More Bombs. No More Walking. No More Fun. No More Swimming. 67. That is 17 years past 50. 17 more than I needed or wanted. Boring. I am always bitchy. No Fun — for anybody. 67. You are getting Greedy. Act your (old) age. Relax — This won’t hurt”

The lyricist and front-man of the Norwegian black metal band, Mayhem, Per Ohlin was better known by his stage name, Dead. Melancholic, dark, depressed and strange were the attributes given to him by his band mates. Not only would he wear corpse makeup onstage, he would also bury his clothes and dig them up before gigs to look like a corpse.

Once, after finding a dead crow, he kept it with himself only to take it out onstage and sniff it. He would often cut his wrists and showed suicidal tendencies which actually worked for the band’s image. Finally, on April 8, 1991, Ohlin left for the woods where he shot himself dead after slitting his throat and wrists with a knife.

His note read: “Excuse the blood, but I have slit my wrists and neck. It was the intention that I would die in the woods so that it would take a few days before I was possibly found. I belong in the woods and have always done so. No one will understand the reason for this anyway…”

One of England’s most gifted author, Virginia Woolf was quite artistic in the way she died as well. On March 28, 1941, Woolf filled the pockets of her overcoat with stones and drowned herself in River Ouse.

Her body was found on April 18. She was 59 years old and the relapse of her clinical depression was too much for her to take this time. The beginning of the Second World War, the burning down of her house during the Blitz and the cold receptions to the biography that she had written for friend Roger Fry worsened her mental health.

Her note to husband, Leonard read: “Dearest, I feel certain that I am going mad again. I feel we can’t go through another of those terrible times. And I shan’t recover this time…. Everything has gone from me but the certainty of your goodness. I can’t go on spoiling your life any longer”
