This Delhi-Based Designer Couple Has Adopted Over 15 Stray Animals To Give Them A New Life

It is not every day that you get to see random acts of kindness bestowed upon our furry friends. It is not every day that a random person will stop to adopt a stray pup who’s not in the best of health. But Delhi-based fashion designers Alpana Mittal and her husband Neeraj have made a difference.

After visiting a Buddhist retreat, Alpana had a change of heart and wanted to adopt a dog. But life came in the way. But when she laid her eyes on a puppy who was partially blind in one eye, her heart skipped a few beats.

“I rushed there expecting to see a bunch of happy dogs, but what I saw killed me. This little puppy was all alone, and had been discarded because he had one gray and cloudy eye. He was also not being looked after, and was covered in tics and red ants.”

Alpana knew he was it, and she readily adopted him. After this episode, Alpana and Neeraj had a whole new world open to them. They started feeding and taking care of a few stray dogs, and when they responded lovingly and started recovering, Alpana and Neeraj knew what they had to do.

They started contacting animal rights activists, vets, and shelters to pick up and treat more and more stray animals, who were shunned because they either had an abnormality or they were very ill.

“My husband who had till then been scared of dogs gave up one entire floor of our office and his own room for animals that needed rest and recovery.”

Alpana and Neeraj sleep on couches in their living room, while the animals they’ve adopted sleep and recuperate in their bedroom and converted office. They have taken care not to adopt random strays, but those animals who were left for dead out of ignorance and need the utmost care.

Some of the pets they’ve rescued are a cat who was an acid-attack victim, a German Shepherd who was mercilessly beaten, and a Lhasa Apso with a tumour.

Emerald, the acid attack cat was in such a horrible state, that Alpana thought of putting her down first. In her words,

“He was a mangled mass of rotting flesh and bones with hardly any skin. And there was a strong stench of putrid meat that made it difficult for us to breath near him. There were deep holes all over him, his insides were exposed, and he was infested with maggots. But his beautiful emerald green eyes were fierce, and told us he didn’t want to die.”

Emerald gradually mellowed down and attended the vet’s sessions, and what he is now is a healthy ball of fur who looks nothing like his former self.

Ken, the 2-year old German Shepherd, was beaten by his previous owner. Ken grew up on a breeding farm, and he was violated for no reason.

But as soon as Alpana took him in, he took to her like fish to water, and they’re inseparable now. He is also making a fast recovery, and his dislocated leg is on its way to fully healing.

Angel, the Lhasa Apso, was in a deplorable condition at an unfit animal shelter, and they later found out that she had a tumour in her cervix.

Her eyes were cloudy because of a bacterial infection, and she was in a generally horrible state, until Alpana and Neeraj decided to take her in. She says

“My husband named her Angel, and she really is one. Today, she can see pretty well, and we’re waiting for some test results to remove her tumour surgically and have her neutered.”

This is what kindness is all about, and we’re sure Alpana and Neeraj are earning a tonne of good Karma because of their efforts.
