India is a country that has a rich culture and heritage but it often fights with stereotypes that oversimplify its complexity. A lot of foreigners seem to think that ours is a land of snake charmers, poverty, and homogeneity. But while India has its own set of problems (there is no denying that) it is essential to recognize India’s multifaceted reality and appreciate it without succumbing to generalizations.

However, there are certain stereotypes pertaining to India that are indeed true, at least in the eyes of most people. And Indians on Reddit have taken to r/AskIndia to list some of the stereotypes that might just be true. Here’s a look at some of them:

The lack of civic sense.

This is a funny one: waking up early indeed solves some of your problems, if not all.

Here’s another one – drink water and go out for a walk.

Indian men tend to behave very creepily around foreign women.

Those who are serious about studying would study anywhere.

Our society is largely conservative, misogynistic and narrow-minded.

Do you think we are largely unattractive because of poor diet, lack of hygiene and grooming culture?

We lack basic public mannerisms.

We do not respect other people’s personal space.

We tend to have very messed up ideas about women who choose to share their lives on social media.

India is unsafe for women. Period.

Because of our incompetent garbage disposal methods, several neighbourhoods across our country smell weird.
