Women are taking charge of themselves and standing up for what is wrong. They are speaking up about their experiences with sexual harassment, abuse and violence. They are teaching the society a lesson that they can and they will fight back if pushed to it.

There are teenage girls who are beating the crap out of assaulters but there are also grown women taking drastic measures to make their voices heard.

Sri Reddy, an aspiring Tollywood actress resorted to what she called ‘strip protest’ to fight against the casting couch in Telugu film industry.

According to TNN, she stripped naked in front of the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce at Filmnagar. She expressed that she had been sexually exploited by several directors and producers, apart from being denied membership of Movie Artistes Association.

She said that she has been forced to send nudes to people to seek roles. However, she hasn’t been given a role despite that. She said,

“They see the videos and give no roles. They have even asked for live nude videos from me. That is the extent to which they go to take advantage of women who seek roles.”

Sri Reddy came to the Chamber in a salwar suit and started stripping down to her undergarments.

She wanted to make herself heard and said,

“This is the only way I can think of expressing my grief. If I have shown myself nude to several people in the film industry and despite that have got no roles, the only way I can protest is by going nude publicly.

Sri Reddy also said that is the issue is not addressed, she will blow up the matter even more. All she wants is for film producers to give a chance to local talent. She added,

“They give roles to actresses imported from Mumbai or others places, whereas we local girls are only sexually exploited on the promise of being given roles.”

It saddens me to see women taking such drastic measures just to be heard about their grievances. I am no judge of whether her method of protest is right or not, but no woman deserves to be driven to this point.
