Spainsh Model Angela Ponce Set To Become The First Transwoman To Take Part In Miss Universe

In a world that just needs a reason to discriminate, transgenders are always looked upon the wrong way. To be brutally honest, we are far away from breaking the stereotypes of how one should look, sound or talk and it’s high time we make efforts to educate the society about gender equality.

And just in case, you are still confused, the wonderful slam poetry “I Am A Woman And I Have A Penis” by Recee Burrows Lyons, can help you get a better idea about the fault in our minds.

Needless to say, the life of a transgender is not as easy as we think it to be. While many of them accept the rejections and daily struggles that come by, there are a few who break the shackles to outshine the criticism. Angela Ponce, a transgender model, definitely falls in the second lot.

According to News18, Angela Ponce created history by winning the coveted title of Miss Spain 2018 and will now follow it up by representing her country at Miss Universe 2018, which will be held in Philippines.

Ponce, who will take part in the pageant in December, took to Instagram to share a post on Instagram.

“Bringing the name and colors of Spain before the universe is my great dream.”

“My goal is to be a spokesperson for a message of inclusion, respect and diversity not only for the LGBTQ+ community, but also for the entire world.”

Transgender women were barred from competing in Miss Universe up until five years ago. However, it was because of Canada’s Jenna Talackova who was barred from competing because she was transgender, the rule had to be overturned. With the help of women’s rights lawyer Gloria Allred, she legally challenged the rule and brought about the change.

However, this was not the first time, Ponce took part in Miss World Spain. She competed on the Miss World Spain stage in 2015 after completing her transition in 2014 but lost to Miss Barcelona Mireia Lalaguna.

This is a remarkable achievement by the model and we hope she fulfills her dreams of making her country proud. Nonetheless, she has already been a role model for her community and an inspiration for many. More power to you, woman!
