New-Age Shravana Kumara: Sons Carry Mom On Shoulders To Fulfil Her Wish To See Rare Flowers

Have you heard the mythological story of Shravana Kumara? For those unversed, Shravana Kumara is a character mentioned in the Ramayana who carried his blind parents on his shoulder to take them to 4 dhaam ki yaatra.

You must be thinking why am I telling you this age-old story? Well, that’s because we came across two Shravana Kumaras in 2022.

In a video that’s now being extensively shared online, two brothers were seen carrying their ailing mother on their shoulders to make her wish come true.

The 87-year-old lady named Elikutty Paul hailing from Muttuchira in Kottayam District expressed to her sons her dream to see the rare Neelakurinji flowers (Strobilanthes kunthiana) that had bloomed in the neighbouring district of Idukki.

On knowing their mom’s wish, the two sons Rojan and Sathyan came to action and drove 100 km down to reach Kallipara hills near Munnar. But since there were no motorable roads to the hilltop where the flowers grew, they decided to carry their mom on their shoulders.

The two sons lifted their mom on their shoulders and trekked some 1.5kms to the hilltop which was covered with purple Neelakurinji flowers.

The flower is so special that it blooms in the Western Ghats only once in twelve years. This is why the old woman wanted to see them so dearly. Interestingly, the Nilgiri Mountain range is named after this purplish-blue flower that blossoms there.

Props to these guys who didn’t brush their mother’s wish under the carpet even though it was difficult to fulfill. In an era where kids prefer leaving their parents home alone or dumping them in old age homes to go live their own lives, these guys are an inspiration.
