Misleading Report of 3,000 Tonne Gold Ore Discovery In UP’s Sonbhadra, Twitter Reacts

Update
This story turned out to be misleading. Numerous media outlets including Storypick were misled. We regret and apologise for the inaccuracy.
Updated facts:

  1. The Geological Survey of India (GSI) rejected the claim made by a district mining official about the gold ore discovery.
  2. GSI Director General (DG) M Sridhar revealed that Son Pahadi of Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh could have a probable category resource of 52,806.25 tonnes of ore with 3.03 grams per tonne gold.
  3. Which means 1 tonne of gold ore can produce 3.03 grams of gold metal. Hence the theoretical gold that can be extracted from 52,806.25 tonnes of ore should be around 160 kgs and not 3,000 tonnes as reported in the media.

Sonbhadra is the 2nd largest district of Uttar Pradesh and the only district to border 4 states in the country including Madhya Pradesh in the west, Bihar in the east, Chhattisgarh to the south, Jharkhand to the south-east. However, that is not the only reason Sonbhadra has been the centre of attention for many over the years.

Sonbhadra has in its name ‘son’ or ‘sona’ which means gold. According to NDTV, the British first initiated the process of hunting gold reserves in various regions of Sonbhadra. However, nothing seems to mention whether they accomplished or not.

The Geological Survey of India had started the works for finding gold reserves in Sonbhadra back in 1992, reports Hindustan Times.

It is now, after almost 28 years, that the GSI has found gold deposits consisting of nearly 3,000 tonnes which is worth Rs 12 lakh crore in Sonbhadra, reports HT.

According to the data given by the World Gold Council, India currently has 626 tonnes of gold reserves. The new reserves are almost five times that amount.

The official letter of the Uttar Pradesh Directorate of Geology and Mining alleges that GSI has discovered exactly 2,943.26 tonnes of gold at Son Pahadi while 646.15 kilograms of gold has been discovered Hardi block, reports News18.

However, it is gold ore which was discovered in Sonbhadra from which the gold metal can be extracted. A report by Money Control reports that a 7-member team has been given the task of geo-tagging and mapping the goldmine areas. The government has started the process of leasing these mines.

According to a report by Business Today, if 3,000 tonnes of gold is added to India’s gold reserve, then India will have the world’s 2nd largest gold reserve next to the United States. This discovery can be expected to boost the finances of the country.
