No matter how forward thinking our present generation claims to be, open minded liberals in our country are a minority. There still exist large factions in our society who do not believe in equality across genders. However, until now I used to believe that the educated sections of our society, especially those from premier institutes like the IITs do have a vision for a society based on the principles of equality.
Turns out, I was wrong.
In this Facebook post, popular singer Sona Mahapatra slammed the ‘Mood Indigo’ college fest at IIT Bombay, accusing the institute of being a ‘cesspool of mediocrity.’
She claims they put forth a caveat on her performance stating that she must be accompanied by a man on stage. A solo female headliner was strictly not permitted.Â
IIT Bombay,
You claim that you are Asia’s ‘biggest’ cultural fiesta & take pride in being a premier institute of highest learning in the world too. I LAUGH at that claim & call you out straight up on this date for actually being a cess-pool of mediocrity instead.
You have good company in festivals like NH7 & other big music festivals in such discriminatory practices, so take heart (one Anoushka Grammy Shankar doesn’t change the obvious, yo boys!)
Merry Christmas.
Happy New Year.
Big love,
Sona Mohapatra
It’s quite appalling to find out that institutes like IIT which nurture some of the finest minds in the country are plagued with such blatant sexism in their fests. I sincerely believe there is no logical explanation for not allowing female singers to perform solo as headlining acts on stage.
It just makes no sense!
