Yesterday, people living and breathing on social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram among others almost had a breakdown when rumours of them possibly being banned from today in India made headlines.
People speculated this after the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology released a set of guidelines for regulating content on OTT platforms and social media back in February, the window to accept them was yesterday, May 25. The new rules come into effect starting May 26, reported Hindustan Times.
Apart from the Twitter-like desi application Koo, no other social media platform has accepted the guidelines yet. Hence, it was suspected that they would be banned in the country. But Facebook in a statement said that they aim to comply with the provisions of the IT rules and continue to discuss a few of the issues which need more engagement with the government, reported Business Today.
However, even today, the social media platforms are working just fine and no official statement has been released by the Indian government regarding their ban.
The new IT guidelines require social media platforms to:
- Have active monitoring of content on the platform
- Appoint a chief compliance officer, a nodal contact person, and a resident grievance officer residing in India
- Publish a monthly compliance report disclosing details of complaints received and action taken
- They will also be required to have a physical contact address in India published on its website or mobile app, or both.
And amid all this confusion, #BanFacebook, #BanTwitter #BanInstagram started trending online with people going bonkers with hilarious memes and jokes.
