13 Smart Inventions By IIT Students That Can Make Our Lives Easier

Some get into IIT to prove a point, some others by parental force, and some regard it as a four-year journey to discover themselves and figure out what they actually want to do in their lives after college. But there is also a breed who bust their butt to get into the temple of engineering because they are actually interested in it. Yes, there are people like that also. And what can be more awesome for the world other than a bunch of genuinely passionate engineering students who want to contribute in making the world a morecomfortable place to live in.

And following are the many thoughtful inventions by the genius students of IIT institutes, inventions that have the potential of turning around our lives for good! So sit back, read through, and thank them.

1. TrueHb Hemometer –  Going through the hassle of getting haemoglobin tests done at diagnostic centres can now come to an end

Invented by: Ambar Srivastava, student of IIT-Delhi

Purpose: To test people for anaemia.

Awesomeness quotient: Almost the same size as a regular mobile phone. And as far as its efficacy is concerned, it is approved by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS).

2. Portable house for construction workers – Because they wanted to support the living conditions of the labourers working in their campus

Invented by: Deep Karpe, Nihar Kotak and Sumit Deshmukh, students of IIT- Gandhinagar

Purpose: In addition to being a portable and comfortable home for the construction workers, it can also be a great help in disaster relief camps and army cantonment areas.

Awesomeness quotient: It is a foldable structure made of hollow steel rods, and can be easily dismantled. And not just that! It also sports provision for ventilation and light.

3. A dual pin stapler – A simpler solution for our complicated needs

Invented by: Suyash Patkar, Saurabh Garg and Spandan Das,  students of IIT-Gandhinagar

Purpose: So that you don’t have to use two separate pin-size staplers.

Awesomeness quotient: The team has modified the original stapler in such a way that it dispenses both large and small pins, as per the user’s requirement.

Purpose: It was originally created by Krishna to keep himself updated with the developments revolving around the aftermath of September 11 attacks. Now, it is a trending news hub like any other.

Awesomeness quotient: It is one of the most popular features provided by Google services.

5. SmartCane™ – A boon for the blind!

Invented by: Rohan Paul, a Rhodes-Oxford & IIT-Delhi scholar

Purpose: While blind people have a knack for identifying obstacles in their ways, there are certain obstacles like overhanging branches, parked vehicles, etc., that their traditional canes can’t really help in detecting easily. And here comes in play the SmartCane.

Awesomeness quotient: Clears out major demerits associated with the traditional cane, as this one helps the user detect any obstacles above knee-level upto a distance of 3 metres. The traditional cane, on the other hand, has to be tapped from side to side, and so it can help detect obstacles only on ground and that too within a range of just about half to one metre.

6. Advanced Breathalyzer Helmet- It guides your bike to give up on you every time you plan to ride under influence of alcohol

Purpose: To prevent drunken riding.

Awesomeness quotient: This smart helmet reads signals emitted from the person’s breath, and if the breath has a high content of alcohol, it signals the bike to not get started.

Purpose: To reach out to those who like wacky ideas, and all things creative.

8. Netra- Drone that helped Indian army with rescue operations during the recent natural calamity in Uttarakhand

Purpose: To help Indian army and security forces in rescue operations.

Awesomeness quotient: An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), Netra first attracted limelight in the movie ‘3 idiots’. Now following its successful performance in Uttarakhand flood relief operations, it is seen as the recent big thing.

9. Matsya- Something important to support the varied marine tasks

Purpose: To aid marine research, rescue operations and navigation.

Awesomeness quotient: It can set itself deep in the marine waters. In Robosub (International Autonomous Underwater Robotics Competition), held annually in San Diego, Matsya qualified for the semifinals.

10. SAFER – Guardian Device for Women

Purpose: It alerts your loved ones in case you are stuck in a dangerous situation.

Awesomeness quotient: It is a smartphone app, paired with a jewellery piece. The app gets to work when the button on the piece is tapped twice. The signal travels to your loved ones with the help of multiple cellular towers. In some way, it also helps in locating your position so that it becomes easier for them to reach out to you for your protection.

11. 3D display and user interface – If you want to see the 3D version of any product you wish to buy online, this device can do it for you

13. The electric racing car- The inventors were awarded the Formula Student UK Award 2015

Invented by: The IIT-Bombay Racing team (a 37 member team)

Purpose: To get the thrill-game on, but more importantly it is invented with the aim of transforming the sector of electric mobility in India with the use of sustainable alternatives.

Awesomeness quotient: This new Formula Student racing car has some very catchy features. It can accelerate from nothing to 100 kmph in as little as 3.5 seconds! Dubbed EVo 4.0 Formula Student Electric Car, the car was selected to participate in “Formula Student” competition in this July. The competition is held annually at Silverstone circuit in the UK.
