Chinese Family Living In Singapore Are Practicing Hindus Who Worship Maa Kali

A heartwarming video of a Chinese Hindu family living in Singapore has given people a glimpse into the lives of Chinese Hindus in a predominantly Chinese community. The video, originally shared by the Singapore Kindness Movement on Instagram, features Estella and her grandmother, Mdm Tan, as they openly share their journey of embracing Hinduism.

Mdm Tan recalls how it all started when her husband began visiting a temple dedicated to Goddess Kali with his Hindu friends. This temple, gifted by the Sri Mariamman Temple in Chinatown, became an integral part of their faith.

As the kampung (village) where the temple was located faced demolition, Estella’s grandparents saved as many deities as possible and continued their prayers at home. Their house became a place of devotion, and despite some of their neighbours not being Hindu, they have always been supportive.

“When I do annual temple celebrations, my neighbours have never complained about the noise,” Estella shared.

Estella also spoke about how her faith has connected her with many Indian friends in Singapore, even though she doesn’t speak their language. Though their faith is strong, Estella admits that some people still find it hard to understand their identity, often questioning her when she says, “I’m a Chinese Hindu”.

Despite this, the family continues to proudly practice their religion while building meaningful relationships in their community.

Several people were moved by their story of embracing a religion which isn’t generally practised by their community. As it turns out, there are several people across the world who have embraced Hinduism and worship Maa Kali. Have a look:

How wonderful it is to see communities living in harmony irrespective of the religion they choose to follow. 🙂
