Despite the numerous attempts to sensitize the topic of divorce in our country, it is still seen as a taboo subject. The lens in itself with which a majority of our society views divorce is archaic and patriarchal. In most cases, it is the woman who is shamed and not the man and she is accused of not being flexible, adjusting and caring enough.
Joining the bandwagon of people who have such regressive views is popular Mumbai-based matchmaker Sima Taparia on whom an entire Netflix series ‘Indian Matchmaking’ is based.

In a recent interview, Sima Taparia claimed that divorces happen because people lack patience and are egoistic. India Today quoted her saying:
“Those whom I have matched haven’t taken a divorce yet. But if it happened, it is because they don’t have patience, flexibility, no willingness to adjust and have egoism. That’s how problems are created. They don’t have the values of giving, sharing and caring.”
She went on to very conveniently blame highly educated women and said that they have a tendency to not listen to people.
“People are divorcing because there is no patience, no adjustment, egoism, ladkiya itna padh likh lete hai toh they say why should I listen to anybody.”

A few weeks ago, a man named Pradhyuman Maloo who was featured in ‘Indian Matchmaking’ was accused of domestic violence by his wife Ashima who has currently filed for divorce. Would Sima aunty ask Ashima to compromise too?
