In Another Powerful Answer, Shashi Tharoor Explains Why India Deserves An Apology From Britain

While the whole country lets bygones be bygones, Shashi Tharoor is not the one to let Britain slide into ignorance and wash its hands off the dirty business of colonialism.

Last week, he highlighted the real reason why Britain feels colonialism was good for India. It was because colonial history is not taught to students in Britain, not even the history majors.

He was once again on a UK television channel and spoke about how Britain does not really owe us money, but a moral responsibility to say sorry.

He said that Britain needs to look within and really recognize the fact that they did do wrong when they colonised India.

He again highlighted how much India had contributed to the British Empire, which directly fueled the Industrial Revolution and their wins in World War I and II. He also said that India contributed to almost 80 Billion Pounds in today’s money for Britain’s prosperity.

“Do you know that it was largely Indian soldiers who stopped the German advance in Ypres in the beginning of the war? Do you know India supplied pack animals, food, clothing, rations and even rail lines ripped out of the ground in India and sent off to aid the war effort?”

And like every time, the TV host really had no answer. Shashi Tharoor dropped the mic with this line –

“I am quite sure you don’t know that. Because the British don’t tell you that.”

He highlighted the fact that even Justin Trudeau, the present PM of Canada had apologized for Indian deaths during the Komagata Maru incident of 1914 when Canada sent back a ship full of Indians back to England. This was even though Canada had not killed anyone directly!

And in contrast, Britain has still not apologised for all the profit making, the Bengal Famine, the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre yet.

The closest Britain has come to apologising is when David Cameron visited Jallianwala Bagh and paid his respects and still did not offer a public apology.

You can watch the whole video of the interview here –

Maybe, if Shashi Tharoor keeps his campaign on, India might just get a much-deserved apology from Britain.

Maybe.
