Sania Mirza Lashes Out At The Sad State Of Girls Hockey Team Stranded In Aus. It’s Shameful!

Let’s get the cat out of the bag- India does not care about its sportsmen! I’m sorry to be the one to burst the bubble but our passion for sports somehow restricts itself to cricket and it’s not the even the worst of the problem that plagues the growth of sports in India.

It’s true that there are a few samaritans like Pullela Gopichand and Viren Rasquinha who are doing everything they can to uphold the helm of games like badminton and hockey but there’s a long way before we can bring we can claim to be a sports-friendly nation. And there is a long way before we see more sponsorships and encouragement. In fact, I come bearing proof!

Ace tennis player, Sania Mirza recently shared a video of the Junior girls hockey team after they were left stranded in Australia and it will leave you baffled.

The video featured minor girls whose parents spent and endured a lot to be able to go abroad to play hockey for the country but the treatment they received says it all!

Explaining their plight the girls confessed that they missed their matches for two consecutive because they couldn’t reach the ground by time. The team also claimed that the per-head cost of each player was $2.5-3 lakh still no arrangements were made.

“Ek ghanta bacha tha tab kisine bola ki metro se jana padega. Metro se aate time lag gaya toh aaj ka match bhi miss hogaya. India ki hockey team taraki kaise karegi. Jab kuch mil hi nahi raha bahar aake,” added a player.

The video was shot by a taxi driver in Adelaide, Australia who tried his best to get the girls to the venue in time but, alas!

While sharing their plight, Sania wrote on her Facebook

“Incredible!! And then we are questioned about how and why ‘India doesn’t produce more champions’.

I don’t know who is responsible but hopefully, this will reach the concerned people and authorities and something will be done soon.. it’s been going on for way, way too long!”

And we couldn’t agree more.

On further reading, it turns out the video had gone viral a day or two ago when it surfaced, resulting in a lot of shares and questions…

To which Sports Authority of India had an even bewildering reply. It reads,

Yes, according to the high commission, they did not sanction the participation in the tournament, and had no idea about this issue.

But amidst all the confusion, the good news is the Sikh Association of Adelaide came to the girls rescue, providing them with food and clothing from the local Gurudwara, while giving them the much-needed transportation to and from the grounds, reports Sportskeeda.

And it’s the same thing that rekindles your faith in humanity. However nothing takes away from the fact that young talent were left squandering the streets. Nothing!
