Sameera Reddy On Post-Partum Depression & Why It Is Important To Seek Professional Help

Motherhood is a wonderful thing. Sometimes though, some aspects of it become too emotionally overwhelming and may result in post-partum depression. Sameera Reddy, who became a mom twice with son Hans and daughter Nyra, also went through it.

However, her condition was brushed off as “pregnancy blues”. Which is why she started a campaign called #ImperfectlyPerfect during her second pregnancy to raise awareness about the issue.

Recently, she opened up about her journey of coming out of depression and shared some advice for other moms-to-be.

Hindustan Times quoted her saying,

“My campaign comes from the fact that I felt completely disillusioned and broken after being pregnant the first time when I gained weight and was 105 kgs. The perfect body and the perfect face that I worked on, for my film career, broke apart and I was completely lost.”

“I also realized the importance of self-acceptance and really loving yourself which is lacking in today’s day and age. Moreover, social media has made this anxiety worse. My campaign aims at combating this feeling and creating awareness that everything may look picture perfect on social media, but it isn’t necessarily true. Internal happiness matters the most.”

She further added that it is important to seek professional help in the early stages itself.

“Back then, I didn’t even realize I was suffering post-partum. When I complained that I was emotional, moody and feeling very disconnected, I was told, that they were the pregnancy blues. I went with that and kept thinking something is wrong with me. But later, when I consulted a doctor and opened up about my negative thoughts and how I was often feeling extremely low, that was when I was told that I had postpartum depression.”

“As I waited too long to open up and get a diagnosis, it took me almost a year to get out of it. This time, I was vocal and I wanted to help new mothers realize when and if they were slipping into it. It’s nothing to be ashamed of.”

Thank you, Sameera, for speaking up about aspects of motherhood that may be embarrassing to share like breastfeeding, milk production, wearing shapewear to hide the bulge and disillusionment.
