Saif Ali Khan On ‘Tanhaji’s’ Version Of History & Why Actors Shy Away From Taking Political Stands

Actors often defend their work, the characters they play and their films even in the face of public ire. Case in point, Shahid Kapoor on the toxic masculinity in Kabir Singh. Which is why it is so refreshing to see Saif Ali Khan acknowledging that the story of Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior doesn’t align with India’s actual history in an interview.

Hindustan Times quoted him saying, “I was very excited to play the role because it’s a delicious role. But when people say this is history; I don’t think this is history. I am quite aware of what the history was. I don’t think there was a concept of India till perhaps the British gave it one. I don’t think there is really any constructive point in arguing about loudly, provided you yourself know why you’re doing it.”

The actor essayed the role of Mughal General Uday Bhan Rathod in the movie. DNA India quoted him saying,

“I would really like to a part of a film industry that would take a stand that wouldn’t make mass kind of films like that. Films that would rather say ‘hey this is what history is’ rather than mould it to certain kind of belief. But people say that is what runs and that’s what’s given it the extra kind of bump, I mean it’s more than just action movie. There’s an idea there that seems to have caught on, but certainly a dangerous idea. It’s not great, but it is what it is.”

On the personal front, the actor admitted that he had never been happier. But while talking about the country, he said he feared that we’re moving away from secularism. He explained why some actors don’t take political stands by saying,

“The impact of things that actors say, is so strong, that one might argue whether it’s fair for them to take a political stand at all. We might say something and the film might get banned, and the poor guy who didn’t even say anything would suffer.”

Whether we agree with Saif’s point of view or not, we appreciate his candidness as opposed to diplomacy, don’t you agree?
