“A Big Tamasha,” Saif Ali Khan Reveals The Hypocrisy Of Indian Awards Shows

Even though Indian award shows are a pompous affair filled with glamour and entertainment, the winners during such ceremonies are often quite predictable. In fact, actors like Kangana Ranaut and Abhay Deol, have even spoken about how such shows are rigged and that talented artists are not given due recognition due to systemic corruption that exists in the industry.

Recently, Saif Ali Khan revealed that he doesn’t believe in Indian awards shows. The actor admitted that even though many felt he was undeserving of his National Film Award, he has proven his talent over the years, reports HT.

He was quoted saying,

“Yes, I was seen to be undeserving of the few awards that I received earlier in my career, including the National award for Hum Tum. But I think over the years I’ve proven myself to be more worthy of recognition.”

Shedding light on the ‘manipulation’ that happens at Indian awards shows, the actor added,

“To be honest, I don’t believe in them. Some years ago I was called for an awards function. When I got there someone higher up in the organization told me, ‘We wanted to give you the Best Actor award. But you know how it is. We’ll give you the award for Best Actor in a comic role.’”

According to Saif, the credibility of award shows was hit after the introduction of the ‘commercial aspect’ to the events. After that, he mentioned, they just became “a whole big tamasha”. He further added, “Why we haven’t created that environment of camaraderie is a debate for some student of sociology to figure out.”

“As I see them, award functions are an excuse to make some money by performing on stage. If you have intelligence, then you spend the money well. That’s what awards are worth as far as I can see. It’s not about pretending to be an art of a community.”

Well, there are a lot of talented actors in the industry who truly deserve recognition for their brilliant performance. Don’t you think so? Tell us.
