Remember when there was too much chaos in a classroom and the teacher would say, “Is this a class or a fish market?” I’ve often imagined what our teachers would compare the utter pandemonium that reigns in the Parliament to! Makes you feel sorry for the Speakers of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha who somehow manage to retain their sanity. Though sometimes, out of this chaos comes something pure gold. Much like what happened in the Rajya Sabha yesterday between PM Narendra Modi and Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury, ft. Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu!
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in the middle of his speech when something he said set off Renuka Chowdhury into raucous laughter.
PM was willing to carry on but was interrupted by a rather disapproving Chairman Venkaiah Naidu who then reprimanded Ms. Choudhury for LOL.
“I will have to name you Renukaji for your unruly behaviour.”
However, PM Modi sharp quip in response to this is what got the Upper House and the Internet guffawing with laughter!
It’s better watched then read about so here you go!
Guess which character in Ramayana is the Prime Minister referring to listening to Renuka Chowdhary’s laughter? pic.twitter.com/GvjZ6TGNOc

Now that was a total curve ball from our PM! And Chairman Naidu’s reaction was hilarious too!
Post the session, in an interview, Renuka Chowdhury remarked that PM’s remark was denigrating women.

However, Twitter was mighty impressed with the jibe and made all the possible Ramayana references!
1. BJP IT Head Amit Malviya went on to conduct a ‘guess the character’ game and then shared a video clip of Surpanakha, a demoness who was Raavan’s sister.

2. One Ramayana laugh from the call centre!

3. In today’s episode of Ramayana…

4. Comedy Nights With Kapil?
Renuka Choudhary 's horse laugh in Parliament still ringing in my ears! Ramayana and Mahabharata , plus Kapil Sharma show combined.

7. That’s a general observation by most people that Ms. Chowdhury might have gotten it right.

8. Applause!
Hate him or like him. He is the Master Orator. That Ramayana jibe to Renuka was hilarious. #ModiHitsBack

11. Nice idea, no?
#RenukaChowdhury can easily replace #ArchanaPuranSingh in a #ComedyShow. #PMSlamsCongress #ModiHitsBack

12. Some people had a counter argument for Ms. Choudhury’s ‘denigrating women’ remark.
While she dines, her maid stands and watches. Is this not denigrating the status of a woman? #RenukaChoudhary #RenukaChowdhury pic.twitter.com/zgAIwrobo1

13. Okay then!

However, there were those who believed that Modi’s jibe was rather unbecoming of him as the Prime Minister of a country and also quite insulting.
1. Not cool.
So it's not cool for woman MP to cackle in Parliament but totally cool for Vice President to suggest she see a doc (cos #MentalIllness?) and for PM to compare her to a demoness whose nose was cut off? And then for all the menfolk to cackle? #misogyny #RenukaChowdhury
— Ranjitha Gunasekaran (@ranjim) February 7, 2018
2. Sick!
Except @nsitharaman, the boys club is busy thumping the desk and celebrating a misogynist comment by the Prime Minister of India, really sick! #RenukaChowdhury https://t.co/R80gRHZ0zH
— vijaita singh (@vijaita) February 7, 2018
Some even called Venkaiah Naidu’s reaction better than the PM’s!
Frankly, I feel the better quip came from Vekaiah Naidu – "what's wrong with you, if you're not well, go see a Doctor". #RenukaChowdhury #RenukaChaudhary
— GhoseSpot (@SandipGhose) February 7, 2018
There’s no denying the comeback was a rather smart and sassy. But is it really denigrating to women? Or is it commensurate with the Renuka Choudhury’s disrespect for the Upper House decorum? That’s for the beholder to decide.
