Karnataka Researchers Convert Fridge Into A Disinfection Chamber Amid COVID-19 Crisis

The coronavirus outbreak is rapidly taking its toll over the nation. It has already infected over 13,000 people in India with 427 deaths as of now. And as per the prescribed guidelines, the only way to curb the spread of the deadly virus is by staying home and avoiding infection. We are asked to wash our hands throughout the day and try to sanitize everything before use.

Amid such health crisis, researchers Dr. Arun M Isloor, head of Chemistry Department, National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), Surathkal and scholar Syed Ibrahim have invented a device that disinfects any object kept inside it for 15 minutes. They have used an old refrigerator to convert it into the ‘disinfection chamber’ and named it ‘Zero COV’, reports News18.

The researchers claim that the device kills 99.9% of microorganisms present on the surface of the objects placed inside it. Moreover, apart from other objects, the device also disinfects edible things like vegetables and fruits, reports NDTV.

“Switching on the chamber for 15 minutes ensures 99.9 percent destruction of microorganisms present in the surface of the items,” Dr Isloor said.

What a discovery! This disinfection chamber is surely the need of the hour. While industrial manufacturing of such a device right now seems uncertain, we would love to get a tutorial from the researchers and try making one at home. What say?
