TN’s ‘Idli Amma’ Continues To Sell ₹1 Idlis Despite Losses To Feed The Poor Amid Lockdown

In August last year, a granny from Tamil Nadu was all over the internet, capturing headlines. Why? Because at an age of soaring prices, she was selling idlis with complimentary chutney for just Re 1!

The kind lady had started this business 30 years ago, then selling idlis for 50 paise a piece. It is only in recent years that she decided to increase the price.

However, at a time when the coronavirus pandemic has subjected people to remain indoors, prices of essential items are increasing rapidly, and businesses are suffering huge losses, this 85-year-old granny continues to sell her idlis for Re 1.

Speaking to India Today, she said:

“The situation Has Been a little difficult since the COVID-19 started, but I am trying to provide idlis for Re 1 to the poor. I won’t increase the rate but the prices of ingredients have risen.”

Popularly known as ‘Idli Amma’ in Coimbatore, she is now getting help from others to fulfil her commitment to the poor. Many have donated groceries and other essentials to her so that she can continue her kind enterprise without having to go through hardships.

In these tough times, alongside people who are trying to help those in need, we have also seen people becoming more self-centred. From panic hoarding essential items to refusing to help their house-helpers, we have come across instances of humanity taking a hit.

May the world learn a thing or two about selflessness from her. This woman has a heart of gold! 🙂
