Ranveer Singh Was Supposed To Play ‘Kabir Singh’ But He Rejected As The Film Was ‘Too Dark’

Keeping aside the backlash, I think that nobody could have played the role of Kabir Singh better than Shahid Kapoor. It’s like, the actor finally got his due at the box office alongside being recognized as an incredible actor. But did you know, Shahid Kapoor was not Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s first choice?

‘Arjun Reddy’ was made on a budget of less than Rs 3 crore and it minted Rs 50 crore at the box office. After it became a blockbuster, Sandeep Reddy Vanga decided to remake the film in Hindi because he was being flooded with offers from Bollywood. His first choice for the role of the protagonist was Ranveer Singh. However, Ranveer declined the film because it was apparently “too dark” for him at the time.

“I was continuously getting calls from Mumbai to do the remake. First, it was pitched to Ranveer Singh. I wanted to do it with him. But finally, he decided he will not do it, because it was too dark for him at that time,” Vanga revealed, as quoted by Indian Express.

Vanga further revealed that not a lot of people were convinced by the decision to cast Shahid Kapoor as his track record was a concern. However, he was sure about the actor.

“All industry producers, distributors, everybody saw Arjun Reddy. Shahid’s track record was a concern; none of his solo films had done Rs 100 crore then, his highest was Rs 65 crore. They used to say Rs 55 crore, Rs 65 crore is the kind of business Telugu movies do. ‘Why are you doing it with this guy? If it was Ranveer, the box office would be higher’. But I was always sure about Shahid, he’s a fantastic actor,” he added.

Imagine how the film would have turned out if Ranveer Singh played the role of Kabir!
