Few people catapult to instant fame the way Ranaghat’s Ranu Mondal has. Her viral video made her a star overnight and her life took a massive turn that brought her to Bollywood. She was soon approached by singer and composer Himesh Reshammiya to sing more than a few songs for his film.
Her journey to fame has made the 59-year-old Ranaghat singing sensation an inspiration for many. And to highlight her struggles and tell her ‘rags to riches’ story, independent filmmaker Hrishikesh Mondal has decided to make a biopic on her life.
According to IE, a biopic on her is underway. Reports suggest that National Award-winning Bengali actress Sudipta Chakraborty has been approached to play Ranu’s part in the biopic.
Confirming the same, Sudipta said:
“Yes, I have been offered the film. However, I am yet to receive a script. I will decide if I want to play the character only after reading the script.”
Speaking about the movie, journalist-turned-independent writer Hrishikesh Mondal said:
“People are curious to know about Ranu Mondal’s life. She became a singing sensation overnight thanks to social media, so people are very interested to know more about her. Also, the film will highlight the power of social media in the present times, which has turned roadside singer Ranu into a star.”
The biopic that is reportedly titled, ‘Platform Singer Ranu Mondal’ will mirror the online sensation’s journey from Ranaghat railway station in West Bengal to Bollywood. The biopic will be shot in Ranu’s hometown Ranaghat, Mumbai, and Kolkata.
Reportedly, singer-composer Sidhu (Cactus Band) has been signed to compose music for the film. The biopic is expected to release in February next year.
