India, in its road to development, is still grappling under a lot of social evils. It still houses regressive notions and people who do not understand the concept of gender equality and empowerment. Do not mistake me for a male-basher, but the truth remains unaltered that- women are not safe even in their own homes!

There are several instances when we have got together and discussed the same. Unfortunately, today is another day in the diary of dastardly headlines.

A 35-year-old woman, identified as Meena Kashyap, from Patiala district of Punjab was allegedly beaten up by her in-laws with hockey sticks for giving birth to a girl child and dowry demands.

The video that emerged on social media has now gone viral. According to reports, Meena was married to Daljeet Singh and gave birth to a girl whom the latter’s family refused to accept.

The matters worsened when she registered a dowry and domestic violence complaint against her in-laws. She has alleged that, on July 13, her brother-in-law Kamaljeet Singh along with his friends allegedly attacked her with hockey sticks after they got know about the complaint. The complaint was registered in April 2017 at Kotwali police station.

Reports also suggest that the victim met Punjab director general of police, Suresh Arora, last week, over police inaction after her complaint.

The FIR has been registered against her husband Daljit Singh, his brother Kamaljeet and friend Gaurav under sections 454 (house trespass), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 506 (criminal intimidation, 120-B (criminal conspiracy), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The matter has now been allocated to the inspector general of police AS Rai (Patiala division). Hopefully, justice will be meted to her and soon.
