After Receiving Uterus From Mother, Woman Gives Birth To Asia’s First Uterus Transplant Baby

What if I told you that a baby could be born in the same womb that its mother was born in? You’d call me crazy! But indeed, this medical miracle has been accomplished 11 times before. And our very own country has added a 12th time to the list and a first for India and Asia with a baby girl born of a successful uterus transplant!

On May 18 of last year, 27-year-old Meenakshi Walan of Bharuch, Gujarat, received a uterus transplant from her mother.

According to India Today, Meenakshi has been married for nine years, during which she lost two babies after full-term pregnancies and had four abortions. As a result, her uterus was left scarred and unable to handle conception.

At Pune’s Galaxy Care Hospital, Meenakshi received her mother’s uterus, and was kept under observation for a few months. Her steady health even allowed her to return home to Gujarat for while.

Once Meenakshi got her first period, the embryo was transferred into her new uterus.

And now, finally after 17 months since the uterus transplant, Meenakshi has given birth to a baby girl, India and Asia’s first successful uterus transplant baby!

The pregnancy lasted 31 weeks and 5 days (just over 7 months). Meenakshi prematurely underwent a cesarean section at the Galaxy Care Hospital in Pune.

Here’s another reason to be proud of this miracle baby! This is the 12th baby born of this procedure in the entire world! There have been nine in Sweden, two in USA. And now we have one in Asia too!

The man responsible for bringing this joy into the life of Meenakshi Valand and her family is Dr Shailesh Puntambekar, and his team!

Dr Puntambekar is a cancer surgeon and a world-reknowned expert in laparoscopic pelvic surgery and gynaecological cancer surgery.

In a beautiful coincidence, it was Dr Puntambekar’s birthday when he accomplished a feat that will have the world talking about India right now!

Truly a landmark moment of pride for the Indian medical fraternity!
