27 YO College Professor In TN Quits Job To Sell Fish, Says ‘Happier Than Previous Job’

Have you seen how many people who were once hard-core engineering aspirants went on to pursue different careers after completing their degree? Many go on to become artists, writers, and entrepreneurs. Like this guy from Tamil Nadu, who left his well paying job to join his family business of selling fish!

According to a report by The New Indian Express, 27-year-old engineering graduate Mohan Kumar from Karur, Tamil Nadu, who worked as an assistant professor at a private college, quit his job to sell frozen fish.

Kumar’s parents run a fish fry shop at Gandhigramam. He reveals how every day after work, he used to run to the shop to help his parents. It wasn’t long before Kumar decided to quit his job and feed his “passion” for the family business.

His parents were extremely unhappy after hearing this because they wanted him to achieve something “big” after studying Mechanical Engineering and not sell fish. Speaking to TNIE, Kumar said, “Many called me a fool for taking up the fish business after completing engineering. But I love this job more than my previous one.”

There have been several hurdles during the time Kumar ran the shop. For example, his mother was diagnosed with a neurological disorder and they had to shut down the shop, hampering their business and cash-flow. However, the profit which they had made earlier was enough to help them get by the tough time.

Currently, Mohan supplies 2-3 tons of frozen fish and meat to several star hotels engineer and small-scale food chains in Karur. He gets his supply of fish from Thoothukudi and Cochin, and meat from a poultry industry in Coimbatore. What’s surprising is that Kumar earns Rs 1 lakh a month from his business!

“At present, my main aim is to set up a 10-tonne cold storage unit in Karur,” he said.

Many have been inspired by his journey and entrepreneurial spirit. Several educational institutes have been approaching him to deliver speeches on “entrepreneurship skill development”.
