Priyanka Chopra Jonas has not only displayed her acting talent in Bollywood films like ‘Mary Kom’, ‘Bajirao Mastani’, ‘Barfi!’, ‘7 Khoon Maaf’ and ‘Fashion’; but also worked in several Hollywood productions like ‘Baywatch’ and ‘We Can Be Heroes’. She’ll also be seen in the next installment of ‘Matrix’.
Having said that, the actress noted in an interview that while essaying the lead role of Alex Parrish in ‘Quantico’, she realized that she was getting a lot of negativity from her own community.
India Today quoted her saying, “I do notice a sense of protectiveness from a lot of people but also a sense of cynicism from a lot of people and a sense of negativity from a lot of people. Picking on me for no reason.”
Hindustan Times quoted her adding,
“I was talking about this to Mindy (Kaling) a couple of months ago and we were talking about why is it that you get so much negativity from your own community. Very few brown people are in the entertainment business in Hollywood, right? You can count us on your fingers. What our attempt is… We are literally, with our own two hands, trying to create more opportunity for people like us. So, why is there so much negativity for us?”
“When I started working in Hollywood I realized it’s not normal to people’s consciousness that a leading man or woman can be Indian in a mainstream Hollywood show.”
She expressed gratitude to her fans for cheering her on but also admitted that the negativity from the other faction affects her confidence and enthusiasm. “I’ve started noticing the difference between fans who know me and are protective of me and they are the wind beneath my wings. I also feel disheartened and discouraged by the other side.”
