The Grammy Award is considered to be one of the most prestigious awards a musician can be honoured with. It is held in higher regard in comparison to the American Music Awards and the Billboard Music Awards. Which is why prominent artists like Beyonce, Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, Justin Beiber, Billie Eilish and others are waiting with bated breath to see who gets to take home the gilded gramophone home on January 31, 2021.
Recently, the Grammy Award nominations were announced and alongside popular international artists, there was the name Priya Darshini, a 37-year-old Indian-origin New York-based singer. Her debut album ‘Periphery’ has been nominated under the ‘Best New Age Album’ category, reports Moneycontrol.
Priya Darshini was born in Goregaon, Mumbai, and comes from a Tamil family. She is trained in classical music and her interest lies in making cross-cultural music. Not just a singer, she is also an actor, an athlete, and an entrepreneur. Alongside singing, Priya Darshini has done several voice-overs and music-compositions.
Her album, Periphery, brings out the “most vulnerable aspects of a person”. She says:
“I wanted to explore music that brings out the most vulnerable aspects of a person; that raw and unfiltered emotion. What does that music sound like? We wrote the whole record in the twelve days leading to the recording. The entire album was recorded on ONE mic, in an abandoned church in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. What we got was an authentic view into that isolated, vulnerable and powerful space.”
Her recording label, Chesky Records, said that her “knowledge of music from all over the world has resulted in a fresh, imaginative and fascinating new sound. She displays an exciting combination of range, technique, unconventional compositions, a feminist perspective, and a prodigious voice that truly sets her apart from other vocalists”.
