Karnataka Gets Its 1st Eco-Friendly House Which Is Built Using 1,500 Kg Plastic Waste

In a bid to reduce plastic waste and protect the environment from pollution, several people are coming up with unique solutions. Previously, a guy from Gujarat had developed cheaper and stronger bricks using medical waste and recently, researchers at IIT Kharagpur came up with a way to use cucumber peels to make food packaging.

And now, Karnataka has got its first eco-friendly house which is made out of 1,500 kg of hard-to-recycle plastic waste! According to Deccan Herald, the house was developed by a waste collector along with Plastics For Change India Foundation. The house is located at Pacchanady and cost Rs 4.5 lakhs, which is way less than what a regular house would cost!

60 panels made out of plastic waste were used in the making of this house. Each panel is made out of 25 kg plastic.

“This is Karnataka’s first environmentally-friendly ‘recycled plastic house’ in Mangaluru. The durability test of the construction material has been conducted before building the house, said Shifrah Jacobs from Plastics For Change India Foundation.

The foundation is now planning to build 20 more similar houses which would use up to 20 tonnes of plastic waste. These houses would also improve the lifestyle of informal waste collectors in Karnataka.

This is indeed a great way to reduce plastic waste. We hope such houses are built across the country!
