Animal psychologists from the University of British Columbia say that dogs feel stressed and unhappy when they are embraced by their owners, as it stops them from moving.

In a study which analysed 250 pictures of dogs as they were being hugged,  8 out of 10 animals looked visibly uncomfortable.

The dogs may show some signs like folding its ears down or turning their head away. If the dogs have their eyes closed or are licking their lips it could also be a sign of anxiety. If their anxiety levels go high, the dogs may even bare their teeth or may bite.

Dr. Stanley Coren, a canine expert and a professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia says:

“Dogs are technically cursorial animals, which is a term that indicates that they are designed for swift running.”

When in stress, the first line of defence that a dog uses is not its teeth but its ability to run away. So, technically we are trying to deprive them of their ability to move freely.

In case, you have been showering your dog with too many of those “jhappis”, try saving them for your family and friends. Because even dogs need some space! 😉
