Frequent Selfie-Takers Are Insecure And Less Likeable, Claims Study

Selfies are the best and the worst thing to happen to mankind. Best because you didn’t have to ask random people on the street to take a photo of you when you’re alone and then fear while posing that they might run away with your phone. Worst, because flawless. pictures. everywhere!

However, what’s particularly surprising is that nowadays, all people do at social gatherings is take selfies. You might be at a cafe chilling with your friends and there will at least be one in the group who is constantly taking selfies at an annoying rate. They then post the best of them on social media writing how the had a great time with #BFFs. But in reality, they barely spoke to you. And that makes you cringe a little, doesn’t it?

According to a study by Washington State University,Ā people who post lots of selfies are generally looked at in a negative light by others.

“Frequent selfie-takersĀ are almost universally viewed as less likeable, less successful, more insecure, and less open to new experiences than those who typically share photos of themselves taken by other people”, says the study.

The study also went on to point out that if you come across two pictures of separate people but the same context – both travelling for example – your feelings about the person taking a selfie will be negative and about the person posing with a beautiful view behind will be positive.

While researchers emphasized that selfies are by no means a determinant of somebody’s personality, they did, however, make other people think a distinct way about the person.

“Instagram users who posted more posies than selfies were considered more adventurous, more outgoing, less lonely, more dependable, more successful, more self-confident, and better potential friends. On the other hand, accounts that posted more selfies were viewed in the opposite light; overwhelmingly negative,” the study said.

So are you telling me that all this while when I tried taking the perfect selfie and post it on Instagram for people to think I’m attractive, they actually thought the opposite?

I’m beginning to question everything.
