I know the first thing you think when you glance at the morning’s paper- the world is no place for women! And I want to tell you, that we are on the same page. There are a lot of prejudices that women are subjected to and that is when they’re not taunted, policed, harassed and assaulted.

But, and you can call me loony, I refuse to give up hope! I refuse to believe that there is no scope for us, humans. Yes, even I sigh hard at the charade of news and trials that are reserved for women (even in their death) but every small effort counts and we’re going to tell you about all of them. Yes, today is one of those days.

In a historic and empowering first, a Patna bride lead a baraat to her groom, waiting at a marriage hall and we totally dig it!

Snehlata, an assistant manager with a private bank in Mumbai recently married the love of her life Captain Anil Kumar Yadav who works with the Indian Navy and it was the most unusual affair!

As guests queued up on the roads to witness the epic sight, she led a baraat from her house to the Danapur Army Marriage Hall with proper band and bajaa. Yes, the groom was the one to receive her!

In fact, it was the bride who thought of this unique gesture and proposed it to her future in-laws about her plans. And voila, they agreed. She told News18

“Both of us are based out of Bihar and we love our motherland, which is grappling with a number of social evils, including dowry. We are against these practices and have decided to send out a message.”

Hey, it wasn’t easy. But her progressive thinking made it possible. She added…

“I told them about the number of initiatives our Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has taken up to eradicate these evils and his reference worked. Then we told my fiancé that I will come with the baraat and not him. Initially he thought it was a joke, but finally everyone accepted it.”

What a supportive partner, right?

Even he fought for her desires and the rest is (going to be) history!

“Even the thought of marrying in a different caste is considered a sin here, but it never came in our way. However, a dulhan leading a band, ‘baaza’ and ‘baraat’ looked non-negotiable, but our parents agreed.”

*wiping happy tears*

A local who attended the wedding said, “The world is changing and this is an example” and I couldn’t agree more. Gone are the days when women had to stay behind the veil of oppression and honestly, this is a promising start!
