Twitter Lauds Parvathy For Her ‘Arjun Reddy Vs Joker’ Debate After She Slams Misogyny In Cinema

Arjun Reddy and its Hindi remake Kabir Singh drew flak for showing domestic violence, substance abuse, and allegedly promoting misogyny. The film which shows the protagonist in super aggressive form smoking cigarettes and gulping down bottles of alcohol, hurling abuses and misbehaving with the female lead was slammed by many.

The actors of the films, Shahid Kapoor and Vijay Deverakonda have time and again come forward to defend their films calling them ‘just a work of fiction‘. Recently, film critic Anupama Chopra hosted a round table meet with some noted actors of the industry including Parvathy Thiruvothu, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Manoj Bajpayee, Anyushmann Khurranna among others.

The discussion mainly revolved around the topic of the moral responsibility of actors and their ethics to turn down a role that sets a bad example for the public. And obviously, the film Arjun Reddy was brought to notice once again.

Deverakonda defended his film saying, “I feel like the world is fucked. I feel like by making a better film, can I save it? I just see it going downhill. Neither am I like ‘social responsibility’. I think it’s too much of a responsibility to take. Just a film doesn’t decide your behavior.” He received support from Manoj Bajpayee who said that he liked the film.

“Maybe there is a couple who is so in love, it is completely possible if you think of it broadly, that a couple is completely in love, and they give each other little hits and stuff and they completely understand, and they are still in love,” he added.

But Parvathy who has earlier opened up about being a victim of abuse slammed the actor and his film for encouraging abuse and misogyny. She said,

“It is a very fine line reflecting what’s there in the society, showing what misogyny is, and glorifying it. It’s entirely up to the writer and director how they glorify it. When a man is being misogynistic and is being…you know…abusive, and you show that in a way that incites applause in the audience, then that’s glorification.

“And at the same time, you make the audience think whether he’s done the right thing or not, then there you are collaborating with the audience. There, there is cinema, it’s a dialogue,” he added.

Deepika Padukone too extended her support for the same. While Manoj Bajpayee said it isn’t an actor’s responsibility to think beyond the character, referring to Joaquin Phoenix starrer ‘Joker’ Alia Bhatt said she would love to play negative characters in the movies as she can’t be one in real life. Bhatt also said that Joker doesn’t send a wrong message as it explains that the character suffers from ‘mental illness’.

To which Parvathy came up with fitting reply and said,

“Whereas, if you’re saying that there’s no passion in a relationship without slapping each other – and I see the comments on YouTube, where people are engaging and resonating with that – you are engaging with the wrong thing in a massive, mob-like manner, where you’re inciting violence.”

She added that though one can’t stop makers from making such films, one can surely choose not be a part of it.

Parvathy’s words have impressed desi Twitter. People from all over the internet are appreciating Parvathy for taking a stand against the film.
