A person’s voice can tell you loads of things. For one, mothers can usually tell when their child, no matter how grown up, is sad or upset about something. Some Instagram posts say even BFFs can pull the same thing by listening to your voice over a call. Apart from the obvious cues, there’s indeed a lot you can learn about a person from the pitch and tone of their voices.
In fact, a recent US study has suggested that you can tell if your partner is cheating on you or not, simply by listening to their voice!
According to The Conversation, participants in the study were made to listen to recordings of people speaking. No background information whatsoever was provided about the speakers.
Turns out, participants successfully rated cheaters as ‘more likely to cheat than non cheaters. Not surprisingly, women were better at identifying cheaters than men!
To further prove the credibility of the findings, the study ensured that the recordings were taken from people with similar pitched voices. The people were also of similar levels of attractiveness, physical attributes and similar sexual histories. The only difference was that some of them had cheated on their partners, while others hadn’t.
This made it even more difficult to pinpoint what cues precisely led the participants to identify cheaters from non-cheaters.
Now here’s another interesting observation. While women tend to prefer men with deeper-pitched, more masculine-sounding voices, they also rate these men as more likely to cheat!
Conflicting, isn’t it? Well, evolutionary scientists believe that women perceive men with such masculine characteristics (deeper voices, strong physiques) as better to mate with. Studies have linked deeper voices to fathering genetically healthy and long-surviving progeny.
As for men and their interpreting vocal cues, they are more likely to find a woman’s voice the most attractive when women are ovulating.
This further indicates that a person’s voice can give out oodles of cues about fertility, health, attraction and potential infidelity.
This information in the hands of over-suspicious lovers is one dangerous tool! Use it well!
