Online Classes During COVID Helped A Deaf & Mute Boy Reunite With His Family After 9 Years

Never underestimate the power of the world wide web, especially in today’s day and age where various digital platforms can immensely help people in need. For instance, when a 93-year old granny was able to reunite with her family after 40 years thanks to social media or when a Punjab cop’s viral video helped track a father missing from his home in Telangana. Another heartwarming story has come to the forefront, and this time it involves the online classes being held due to the coronavirus pandemic!

As per a report in TOI, a deaf-mute boy named Abdul Razak recently reunited with his family after nine long years of separation.

In 2011, when Abdul was only 10-years old, he was found at a fair in Fatehgarh Sahib as he had strayed away from his family and lost his way home. His father Tahir Ali said, “When we realized Abdul was missing, we lodged a complaint with the police but for years our efforts had gone in vain.”

Abdul is then said to have boarded the wrong bus and was picked up by a truck driver who dropped him in a village called Sirhind. There, a 70-year old philanthropist Gurnam Singh took him to his home where he and his wife took care of the child. He recalls, “A street vendor found him roaming on the streets of Sirhind and took him to a mosque when he realized he is Muslim. At the mosque, Abdul met our village boy of his age, who brought him to our village. Abdul wrote his name and his parents’ name. He knew nothing else.”

Gurnam Singh then put the child in Patiala School for the Deaf for his education where he was provided accommodation as well.

When the lockdown was announced 3 months ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the school encouraged more internet access and Abdul switched to using a computer for his daily online classes. “Exchanging notes on his Facebook account that he created during his classes, he identified a friend. Communicating with him, Razzak was able to trace his family roots in Farrukhabad city of Uttar Pradesh,” says Karman Singh, who is a top functionary of the Deaf school reports The Tribune.

Abdul’s father who now works as a tailor reached Patiala to bring his son back home. “Words cannot explain the love Abdul had received from Gurnam’s family and his school authorities. They are the best examples of humanity.” He added, “Little did I know that I will not only find my son back but also see him clear his matriculation.”
