While growing up we all have had our share of punishments, because that was the way some of us learnt a few things. Our parents had methods and various innocuous threats to keep us in checks. But when the method goes awry, things get way out of hand.

A three-year-old NRI girl from Texas, Shirin Mathews, went missing after her father, Westley Mathews who is said to be from Kerala, as punishment left her outside at night for not drinking her milk.

According to the reports, she was last seen outside of her home in Richardson, just north of Dallas, around 3 a.m. Saturday, wearing a pink top and black pajama bottoms. In a Facebook post by the Richardson Police Department, Sherin has a developmental issue and limited verbal communication skills.

“We are currently looking for a 3-year-old child. Sherin Mathews was last seen by her father outside the family’s backyard in the 900 blk. of Sunningdale. She is approximately 36″ tall and weighs about 22 pounds. She suffers from developmental issues and has limited verbal communication skills. She was last seen wearing a pink top, black pajama bottoms and pink flip flops. If anyone has any information on her whereabouts, they are asked to contact us at 972-744-4800.”

Sherin was born in India and adopted by the Mathews.

Sherin’s father, allegedly told police that he asked his 3-YO child to stand by a tree near an alley as punishment over the milk dispute. When he returned after 15 minutes, she was missing. But he didn’t call the police immediately, but only after 5 hours at 8 a.m.

An NBCDFW report quoted Sgt. Kevin Perlich saying,

“Why was the last sighting at 3 o’clock and the parents not call us until after 8 a.m.? That’s the question we want answered as well. As far as why she was out there, how long she was out there, that’s the questions we have for the parents.”

37-year-old Matthews was arrested by the police for abandoning or endangering a child, and was released on $250,000 bond. In an affidavit, Wesley told the police that he knew about coyotes being spotted in the alley where he left his little girl. Plus, they lived near railroad tracks.

The Amber alert for the case was discontinued because of lack of leads.

We just hope the girl is safe and reaches her family.
