NIT Kurukshetra Imposes 6PM Curfew Time For Girl’s Hostel, Draws Flak Online

Young girls are often asked to come back home when the street lights are switched on before it gets dark. I remember how my male friends still got to play an extra hour in the evening while I had to head back home just when it started to get a little dark outside.

Young girls grow up questing and rebelling against these rules because honestly, it’s not fair. And when they start to develop physically, besides the curfew there are rules on how a girl should dress, places where she can go, friends she can make, and the list goes on.

And the irony is that she is always told that it gets better when we grow up and can take care of ourselves, but it gets worse. You don’t want to be in college and still have a ridiculous curfew!

NIT Kurukshetra’s Kalpana Chawla Girl’s hostel circular recently went viral for imposing a curfew on the female students.

The notice, signed by the chief warden, declared that girls can only roam inside the campus till 6pm after which a heavy fine will be imposed on the “defaulters”.

Redditers couldn’t help but laugh at the curfew set by a hostel which is named after Kalpana Chawla!

Comment from discussion .

One pointed out that policing never works on adults.

When it doesn’t make sense why sunset=curfew.

Does the curfew point out that the campus is unsafe?

A toxic example set by one of the renowned colleges in the country.

Talk about equality.

One of the college students intervened pointing out that the curfew was meant for Holi in order to curb eve-teasing. But why not ban “hooligans” from entering the college instead of locking the girls up?

Here’s where the society is wrong: instead of asking girls to come back home early to be safe from eve-teasing, ask your boys to stop harassing women. Punish the perpetrator, not the victim.
