“I Could Not Protect Her But I Was Able To Fight For Her,” Says Nirbhaya’s Mom After All 4 Convicts Hanged

At 2.30 am, the Supreme Court heard a petition filed by the four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya case. They had sought a stay order on their execution, however, their pleas were rejected.

At 5.30 am, Akshay Thakur, 31, Pawan Gupta, 25, Vinay Sharma, 26, and Mukesh Singh, 32, were hanged at Tihar Jail by hangman Pawan Jallad, reports NDTV. Their bodies were kept hanging in the gallows for 30 minutes and after a doctor pronounced them dead, they were taken to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital for the post-mortem.

Business Today quoted Nirbhaya’s father Badrinath Singh saying, “Today is our victory and it happened because of media, society and Delhi police. You can understand what is inside my heart by my smile.”

Mumbai Mirror quoted Nirbhaya’s mother Asha Devi saying,

“It was a struggle of seven years. I thank every citizen of this country as well as the government. The hanging was delayed but I am happy that finally they have been hanged. This struggle will continue. My daughter isn’t here anymore but I’ll continue to fight for all women of the country. Let’s hope that no daughter goes through anything like this in the future.”

“Soon after the execution, I bowed before my daughter’s picture and hugged it.”

News18 quoted her adding,

“I will proudly say this… I am proud of my daughter… the whole world knows me because of her. It would have been better if I was known as the mother of a doctor but that dream was never fulfilled. I could not protect her but I was able to fight for her.”

Justice delayed, but not denied. Rest in peace, Nirbhaya.
