NZ Remembers The Victims Of Christchurch By Performing An Emotionally Charged ‘Haka’

The Haka is a ceremonial dance in Maori culture which involves vigorous movements, stamping of the feet and rhythmic shouting. It’s performed to welcome distinguished guests or to acknowledge great achievements, occasions or funerals. And the most popular version of it is the one conducted by New Zealand’s All Blacks.

As we all know by now, New Zealand’s Christchurch was recently attacked by terrorists and around 50 people were killed. So, in order to remember them, Kiwis from various walks of life performed the Haka and reminded the world that they stand united.

SBS News reported that a bunch of school kids in Christchurch began an impromptu haka and were later joined by many more.

According to ABC, students from Christchurch Boys’ High School shook the streets with their haka performance. Head boy Fergus Kilpatrick said that,

“It’s something that’s really special. It’s a part of our culture and it’s what we’ve done growing up, and to share that with someone through their grieving period. It’s an honour. It really is.”

The boys were hugged by students and members of the Muslim community. Mohammed Daud Kahn, a member of Christchurch’s Muslim community said:

“We are very fortunate to be here in New Zealand with people … who understand our culture and our religion. This event has scarred us but it’s also brought us closer together. We are hurt, but we are not scared”

Black Power, a bikers’ gang from New Zealand, also brought the crowd to tears with their emotional haka performance.

The Daily Mail reported that New Zealanders in Australia had also joined this movement to showcase their support for the Christchurch victims.

The motive behind every terrorist act is not only to kill people but also to divide a country or a community from within. And if the citizens, the national media and whoever’s in power start pointing fingers, they end up doing more damage than the terrorists. However, New Zealand has shown those anti-societal elements that they stand united and that their display of bigotry and cowardice has not shaken their spirit.
