“If Boys Didn’t Stare At Girls, Should They Stare At Boys?” Says MP Regarding Eve-teasing

Indian politics is chock-full of blatantly sexist remarks. For example, BJP’s UP vice-president Dayashankar Singh had compared BSP chief Mayawati with a prostitute. In 2014, Mulayam Singh Yadav had opposed capital punishment for rape by saying that boys will be boys. In 2013, Digvijaya Singh had referred to Meenakshi Natarajan as a “sau tunch maal”. And Narendra Modi had called Sunanda Pushkar a “50 crore ka girlfriend”.

Feeling disgusted yet? Well, there’s more coming from Satara.

According to Times Now, National Congress Party Leader and Lok Sabha MP, Udayanraje Bhosale was attending a school event, and he was asked to give a solution for eve-teasing. He said,

“If boys will not look at girls will they look at boys. It is natural for boys to look at girls.”

Mirror Now has reported that, during the meeting, the people in the room were apparently cheering after Bhosale’s sexist remark.

This is not the first time Bhosale has made provocative statements. However, this is probably the first time he has gone into damage control on his own. He later added,

“That doesn’t mean that he can do anything. If some boy does something like this he should be punished.”

Bhosale is the 13th holder of the title of Chhatrapati (after Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj). In addition to that, he has faced murder charges and been accused of carrying a service revolver outside a church.

India’s rate of crimes against women is disturbing. So, it would’ve been better for the Lok Sabha MP to use that opportunity to send a message to the boys regarding equality. And if that would’ve been a stretch, maybe he could’ve informed them about the rising unemployment rate and advised them to study instead of staring at girls.
