Muslim Inmate Subjected To Extreme Torture In Tihar Jail, ‘Om Symbol’ Engraved On His Back

With religious intolerance growing at an alarming rate in India, communal harmony remains a crumbling illusion. It was only a few days ago when a Muslim man in Assam was brutally assaulted by a mob and was forced to eat pork. If that wasn’t enough, we now have another horrifying episode that took place in the Tihar Jail and is strong enough to make you feel ashamed.

On Friday, Nabbir, a prisoner at the Tihar Jail, was subjected to extreme torture as an ‘Om’ symbol was allegedly engraved on his back. According to his statement, the superintendent of the jail, Rajesh Chauhan, stamped the sign himself.

Nabbir was lodged in the jail in an alleged arms supply case.

According to India Today, it all started when Nabbir told Chauhan that the induction stove in their barracks was not working properly. Enraged by the complaint, Chauhan went on to beat Nabbir ferociously. He was then called up to his office for ‘trying to be Neta’, where he was thrashed again by the jail officials behind closed doors.

Not satisfied with the bashing, Chauhan took a metal Om symbol, heated it and imprinted it on Nabbir’s back!

AIG (Prisons) PRO, Raj Kumar said that the court has ordered a detailed investigation into the matter and has also asked for the victim to be shifted to a different prison. Hence, Nabbir has now been shifted from the high-risk Jail No. 4 to Jail No 1.

“An inquiry committee has been constituted, report will be brought before Court. Action will be taken as per further order. Prisoner shifted from jail no 4 to 1.”

Here is the tweet:

The court came to know about the cruel act when Nabbir was produced before the Karkardooma Court. Nabbir, whose judicial custody was ending on Thursday, went on to open his shirt before Duty Magistrate Richa Parashar and showed her the symbol. Accusing the jail authorities of merciless beating, he stated that the symbol was engraved with the help of hot metal.

He also added that he was forced to fast in jail.

What comes as a positive bit of news is that the court has taken the matter very seriously. The judge has asked for CCTV footages to be collected and statements of other inmates to be taken. A notice was issued to DGP Prisoner ordering him to conduct a medical examination of Nabbir immediately.

The incident leaves us appalled at the lack of humanity in the jail authorities. We sincerely hope that Nabbir gets justice and the people behind the gruesome act are punished.
