Man cons woman; woman lays a trap; apprehends the man. Cinephilias know that several great movies embody this very plot-line. Yet real-life ‘just desserts’ are rarely served. A woman in Mumbai was the plucky heroine of her own story when she single-handedly apprehended the conman who stole Rs. 10,000 from her.

It all began when Rehana Shaikh visited an ATM near Bandra station to withdraw money on December 18. Due to a technical glitch, she was unable to make the withdrawal. That is precisely when seemingly chivalrous Bhupendra Mishra, (the accused) who was waiting outside the door, offered to aid Rehana.

Even though they couldn’t withdraw money at the time, Mishra succeeded in getting all the card details from her. When she got to her workplace, a text from her bank alerted her to the fact that Rs 10,000 had been withdrawn from her account! Shaikh went ballistic and vowed to nab the culprit who she was sure was Mishra.

She headed to the same ATM every day for 17 days waiting for Mishra to pass by. While a few days rolled by uneventfully, she did spot him at the scene of the crime on January 4. She nabbed him outside the same ATM at 11:30 PM and quickly called the police. An official later reported to leading daily according to India

“She (Shaikh) kept going to the same ATM for around 17 days and waited for the man to cross the area, either near the ATM or the station.

Whenever she used to go to the station, she would wait outside the ATM to catch him.”

Upon police investigation, the authorities realized Bhupendra was a repeat offender. They found that he had earlier been arrested by the Crime Branch in January 2018. The 36-year-old man’s past records showed he had seven cases of cheating people at ATMs registered against him!

We sure hope the man won’t get away scot-free this time!
