Stuck In Mumbai Traffic For Almost 2 Hours, Pregnant Woman Gives Birth In Autorickshaw

Rush hour

Rush hour traffic is something that we all crib about. And when it comes to Mumbai, the term ‘rush hour’ becomes an understatement. In such a highly populated metropolitan like Mumbai, it is past time that we come up with an efficient solution to combat this. Especially when it comes to matters of life and death like this below:

According to India.com, a 26-year-old pregnant woman had to deliver her baby in an autorickshaw in Mumbai after they were unable to make it to the hospital on time due to a major traffic jam.

Jyoti Gaud, a Jaunpur resident, had come to her parents home at Malwani in August of last year after conceiving her second child. Upon experiencing labour pains on Saturday evening, she left home along with her parents for the Samanya Rugnalaya Hospital, which is at a distance of 1 km from their home.

However, due to the rush hour traffic, it took them almost 1.45 hours to complete what should have been a 10-minute journey and the pregnant woman was forced to give birth in the autorickshaw itself.

She had come to Malwani in pursuit of better medical care as compared to that available in Jaunpur. It is unfortunate that despite the planning, she was failed by our struggling infrastructure.

Upon arrival at the hospital, the doctors had to complete the remaining proceedings in the vehicle itself.

“The family later confirmed that both mother and newborn are safe. They have since been shifted to the general ward.”

This incident should serve as a wake-up call to those in charge. How much more should the Mumbai traffic deteriorate before we start on remedying the situation? And it’s not just about Mumbai, our other metro cities could also take a cue from this and get to work.

Modern India deserves better infrastructure and it’s about time we got to it.
