If you have grown up in a desi household, you would know that Indians have special punishments to set someone straight. While in western culture, kids are often ‘grounded’, we are told to do the infamous ‘murga walk’. This is a punishment that is often imposed on kids.
But Mumbai Police took it a step further and made at least 5 men do the murga walk in the middle of the street for allegedly trying to enter the sea at Marine Drive in South Mumbai, reports Times Now.
A video of the incident has gone viral online and while many claim that the men were being punished for not wearing a mask, Senior Inspector Vishwanath Kolekar of Marine Drive police station has clarified that it is not true.
He added that the incident took place on the promenade by the sea and alleged a group of men tried to enter the water. He claimed that the men were allowed to go after a “warning about safety”.
However, Mumbai Police took to social media to announce that an investigation is underway and appropriate action will be taken regarding the incident, reports Outlook India.

“There is a legal provision for action on every violation and that’s the only punitive action that can be taken. The matter is being enquired by senior officers and necessary action will be definitely taken,” they said.
Even as #Mumbai witnesses surge in #COVID19 cases, norms are still being violated in the city. In one such violation, at least 5 men were made to do the "Murga Walk" for allegedly trying to enter the sea at Marine Drive in South Mumbai pic.twitter.com/V6g492voNS

While such age-old punishments have a hint of effectiveness, do you think that it is the appropriate punishment for any offence?
