The Dabbawalas have recently got another tribute by the restaurant chain SodaBottleOpenerWala. Penned and illustrated by artist Abhijeet Kini, the comic portrays Dabbawalas as superheroes of Mumbai city.

The co-partner of the restaurant chain and singer turned celebrity chef Anaida Parvaneh launched the comic at a function held at the SodaBottleOpenerWala’s outlet in Palladium, Lower Parel, on Friday night.

Anaida is a fan of the phenomenal work of the dabbawalas in Mumbai since childhood and wanted to honour them through this comic.

“I wanted to honour them and finally the opportunity arrived. To us at SodaBottleOpenerWala, dabbawalas represent the true spirit of Mumbai at its best and are the heroes for all the right reasons,” she said, reports News 18.

Mumbai's dabbawalas featured in comic book for second time. For the second time in six years, Mumbai's much-adored and globally-famed dabbawalas, or tiffin-box carriers, have been immortalised in a special comic book, simply titled "Dabbawala", brought out by restaurant chain SodaBottleOpenerWala. Penned and illustrated by artist Abhijeet Kini, the comic book was released at a function held at the SodaBottleOpenerWala's outlet in Palladium, Lower Parel, on Friday. The brainchild behind the comic book, singer-actress-turned-celeb chef Anaida Parvaneh confessed that she has been a fan of Mumbai's dabbawalas for over a decade and wanted to do something worthy for them. The newly-launched "Dabbawala", priced Rs 100, portrays the tribe of tiffin carriers as veritable superheroes of Mumbai as explained by a father to his young son, and ends with the kid taking a selfie with his favourite dabbawala. The event was graced by hundreds of Dabbawalas from Mumbai. They were served with several vegetarian delicacies in their trademark ‘dabbas’ (tiffin boxes) instead of normal serving bowls to celebrate their work.

Mouth-watering dishes like “tawa paneer masala” dabba, vegetable berry pulao dabba, vegetable “dhansak” dabba and a Parsi curry dabba. were served in the feast to the Dabbawalas.

The President of the Nutan Mumbai Tiffin Box Suppliers Charitable Trust Ullas S. Muke, who heads the 5,000-strong army of dabbawalas ferrying around 2,00,000 tiffin boxes to offices daily also attended the event. He said he was pleased that people were recognizing the work and contribution of his fraternity.

“This will encourage us to keep working in a systematic manner in the future,” he said.

This is the second time in last six years that Dabbawalas have featured in a comic book. The English-Marathi version of the comic book “Tina & Tiffin” also featured Dabbawalas in 2013.

The way Dabbawalas efficiently feed the hungry office-goers in Mumbai is no less than a Herculean task. They certainly deserve the title of a superhero.
