You Can Now Be Fined ₹5K For Carrying Plastic In Mumbai Airport As They Go Plastic-Free

To curb the usage and wastage of plastic significantly, people from across the world are taking the initiative to go plastic-free. Many are even reusing plastic waste to their benefit, like the engineer who recently made headlines for using sand-filled plastic bottles to build houses.

Joining the no-plastic crew is Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Airport and has taken a landmark decision to go entirely plastic-free. According to TOI, they will go 100% plastic-free from tomorrow, October 2.

The airport has banned the use of single-use plastic like disposable cutlery made out of thermocol, disposable food packaging, plastic straws, water bottles, bubble wraps, etc.

Instead of plastic, they will be using items made out of cornstarch and other biodegradable material. They are to replace the use of plastic bags with cloth bags.

The BMC has also requested passengers and citizens to not use plastic materials which are prohibited. First-time violators of the no-plastic rule will be fined Rs. 5,000 while second-time offenders will be fined Rs. 10,000. Repeat offenders will be fined Rs. 25,000 along with 3-months imprisonment.

In case a citizen is carrying single-use plastic, they may deposit them to the nearest collection centre.
