MP High Court: ‘Unmarried Indian Girls Don’t Indulge In Carnal Activities Unless Promised Marriage’

The Indore bench of Madhya Pradesh’s High Court has been in the news recently for an observation regarding unmarried women. The bench stated,

“India are a conservative society, it has not yet reached such level (advance or lower) of civilization where unmarried girls…indulge in carnal activities with boys just for the fun of it, unless the same is backed by some future promise/assurance of marriage.”

These observations were made while hearing a woman’s case where she alleged rape on the promise of marriage. The accused man’s lawyer, however said that there was no crime as the sex was consensual. TNN also reports that the State maintained that the accused had been raping the girl since October 2018, while marriage was promised at the start, the boy claimed he was already married later.

Justice Subodh Abhyankar maintained that a guy who gets into a physical relationship with a girl should understand that his actions have consequences, therefore, he should be prepared to face them.

The accused was denied bail. The HC said that the girl being serious and committed about the relationship is what prompted her suicide attempt after the boy broke off their relationship. What do you think of the court’s observation? Is marriage the only motivator that sparks a physical relationship? Tell us.
